The "World Star" Project: A Monumental Tribute to Sports Legends

In 1991, an ambitious artistic and commemorative project was conceived to immortalize the greatest athletes from around the globe. The project, initiated by Pepe Crow, envisions a unique marble and bronze star sculpture that symbolically represents the five continents: America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Australia. This artistic monument was officially registered at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. that same year.

The original vision was to create a series of stars to be placed along a prominent avenue, potentially near the iconic SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, home of the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams. The project's timing coincides with Los Angeles's upcoming major sporting events - hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026 and the Olympic Games in 2028, which are expected to draw participants from approximately 200 countries.

In the early stages of the project, the creators sent out 1,500 letters to notable personalities worldwide, seeking input and support for the "World Star Project." By 1994, the initiative had gained significant local government support, receiving endorsements from:

- California Governor Pete Wilson
- Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan
- Councilmember Bernard Parks

The initial plan was to install these stars at the Olympic Memorial Coliseum. However, fate had other plans. The 1994 Northridge Earthquake caused substantial damage to the stadium, resulting in $60 million in repair costs. Additionally, the Rams' departure to Saint Louis, Missouri, for 22 years, effectively halted the project's momentum.

A turning point came in 2016 when Stan Kroenke, the new Rams owner, brought the team back to Los Angeles and constructed the magnificent SoFi Stadium. Throughout these years, the project continued to gather support, receiving over 360 letters of encouragement from around the world.

The proposed "Avenue of Champions" would honor legendary athletes such as:

- Muhammad Ali
- Magic Johnson
- Michael Jordan
- Arnold Palmer
- Kobe Bryant
- Fernando Valenzuela
- Pelé
- Hugo Sánchez

The project aims to create a permanent tribute that celebrates global sporting excellence, connecting fans with the heroes who have inspired millions and transcended the boundaries of athletics.

While the original vision has faced numerous challenges, the passion behind the "World Star" project remains alive, seeking to transform this long-standing dream into a reality that honors the world's most exceptional athletes.
